I think over the past 3 years I have blogged about denim more than anything else. Why is that? Well, first of all denim is probably the most universal fabric I can think of. It works across genders, ages and occasions. Secondly, most of us live our lives, or a good part of it in denim. There is not one woman I know from 18 to 80 who isn’t over joyed by having a great fitting pair of jeans. Denim does change every season and different washes and leg widths come in and out of style, but every woman has one or two pairs that are her favorite. In this blog let’s talk about how to make denim work in every occasion and some of the new styles for fall and holiday that I have seen that would work in everyone’s wardrobe.
I think it’s safe to say casual denim is almost a no brainer for everyone who reads this blog. What you need for Fall 2017 is a great pair of well-fitting skinny jeans that are dark denim ( that is what is in for this fall) and can work with all your tops. My top pick for a great pair of skinny jeans is Eileen Fisher. You can find them either at the Eileen Fisher stores or at Nordstrom (or online at both). Eileen Fisher makes a dark wash, stretch, skinny jean that simply fits every woman. I have seen really hard to fit women leave the Eileen Fisher store happy, with a pair of jeans in hand. The other pair that is new this season from Eileen Fisher is their Organic Cotton Legging Jean. It comes in a fabulous black denim and is as skinny as can be and fits really well.
For Fall 2017 the darker the denim the better. The dark skinny jeans work really well with the fall trends of Maximalist and Dark Romance.
The other jeans that you could have in your closet are the new ankle length skinny or slightly flared jeans. These are great to show off your patterned booties. I love the look of the undone hem. This pair is the other brand that I think fits almost everyone: NYDJ. Their released hem stretch skinny jean comes in regular, plus and petite so everyone can find what fits. If a dark skinny jean is the bread and butter of your wardrobe, these jeans are the new twist that can modernize any look. And they are fabulous to show off any patterned or textured pair of booties you may have bought.
Casual denim works with all your tops, sweaters and sweatshirts. They are your weekend staple and if you are like me, you are likely to live in them almost everyday.
Business Denim or Semi Formal Denim
Work attire has changed a lot over the past 5 years. It is now more acceptable than ever to wear denim to the office, to any restaurant or to almost any meeting. You should stick with classic denim that is polished. Dark denim or black works great for a more business look. And this time you can play with the leg width a bit. Both Eileen Fisher and NYDJ make fabulous straight leg jeans. Eileen Fisher’s is leaning more to the dark jean style while NYDJ’s classic Marilyn style is stretchy and has a bit more of a trouser fit to it. Both are dark and can be worn with blouses and jackets for an office look. Or go back to a pair of dark black jeggings or try these from PAIGE they have a high waist which always looks more polished and are black enough to pass for skinny black pants. For a really true black denim that does wear like a trouser, try any black pair of jeans from Talbots. I love these frayed hem black jeans. The hem is modern but not sloppy looking and is slightly wider than skinny. Great with booties or with a heel too. I wore a pair like these out for dinner the other night with a delicate dark floral and velvet top and velvet booties and they didn’t even look like jeans.
Wear your denim to the office in a professional manner. Pair it with a great blazer or blouse like this floral and lace high neck blouse from Ann Taylor, polish your accessories and shoes and you are all set!
Dressy denim is a relatively new thing. In the past dressy denim meant wearing your jean jacket over a slip dress or wearing a denim skirt with a lacey top. But this season your dressy denim is jeans.
One of the my favorite stores for denim that is slightly off the classic trail is Anthropologie. They always have a great twist to add whimsy and interest to jeans. One of my favorite pairs is pair of McGuire mid rise skinny cropped jeans with the bow detail. How great would these be with a black velvet top for a holiday get together! The other pair I love from Anthro are these Citizens of Humanity Parker Pearled Parker relaxed high-rise jean. This is the only pair of light wash I am likely to show, the pearl embellishment works so well with the lighter wash. Wear these wider leg pants with a velvet top and velvet slides or loafers for a great party look. I found this image on the Anthro website to illustrate what I am talking about. A great pair of statement jeans and a dressy top and shoes can take you anywhere, with the right accessories and look. Another great place to find party looks or dressy looks including denim is Ann Taylor. Ann’s Ruffle tweed blazer with a velvet or shiny cami underneath and dark jeans with a heel can take you from office to dinner and back again. Or go all out for your office party and pair Ann Taylor’s puffy sleeve sequin top with your best black jeans and a sparkly flat and you are set.
Life and events seem to be more casual than ever, so pull out all your dressy tops and wear them with your jeans. Just play with different dressy shoes and accessories to make the looks work for you!
This blog was kind of a teaser of holiday looks. There will be no blog next week November 21 but I will be back November 28 with a holiday wear blog and then the first two weeks of December will be Jewellery with Shoshana Lewis and fall and holiday make up.
I am still available for styling appointments up until mid December. Or if you have any fashion questions just email me at Suethefashionista@gmail.com. Denim is one of my favorite fabrics and I hope I helped you find new ways to wear what is your favorite pair of jeans. See you all in 2 weeks!
Until next time…
