Spring Trends: Bright Stripes and Sporty

Now that it is the end of March perhaps we are all feeling a bit more spring like.  I know the eastern half of the continent is still experiencing winter conditions but at least we know it is not for much longer.  I just came back from 10 days in Arizona and got to test drive some of the new spring fashions before I came home to my rain boots. There are so many great trends and ways to mix and match what is happening this year that as soon as you feel like wearing them, you will love it!

Today I am going to go through the newest sporty trend featuring bright stripes.  I saw them everywhere in the US stores and if you look online they really are in every line and store for Spring.

The beauty of this trend is that you can take the casualness everywhere. To the office, out for dinner and of course, in your casual wear.

Let’s begin with how you would wear this look for the office and for an occasion that calls for business attire. at-striped-sweaterIf you wanted to start wearing this trend right away, Ann Taylor has some great transitional pieces that can work now and later like this striped sweater. Shown with dark denim it would be great with a navy pencil skirt or pants. ruffled pencil skirt ATSticking with Ann Taylor you could add this charming ruffled pencil skirt, which is so chic you could wear it with everything!wide leg pantI have two picks for pants with this type of top. I love the fluid wide leg crepe pant from AT with a heel for day or evening. Or if you are shorter and want to have a different proportion go with AT’s Devlin fit ankle pantankle pant. Both pants come in a navy to match the sweater and a black.

For the office you could even build on these bottoms keeping the sporty look going. at-popover-tunicI have shown this AT top before, but it would be perfect with all the above bottoms in a sophisticated nod to this trend. metallic flatAny metallic ballet of flat will work instead of a more casual sneaker with this trend for the office. Or go for a heel, seychelles-slingbacks but stick to block heel shoes or booties. j-crew-espadrilleAnd of course a classic navy espadrille will always work here.

One other office look that totally works here is any kind of striped dress. striped dressThis knit striped dress from AT could take you anywhere.  I love it with the lace up flats, but great with a block heel pump or espadrilles as well.  Another stripe dress that works great for the office is striped knit dressfrom Whitehouse Blackmarket.  Where as everything seen at AT is paired with navy ( a great alternative to black for spring) WHBM pairs back to black, which we all have as a staple in our wardrobes. This knit dress has some playfulness at the hem and would be great with a black or white blazer.

If you work in a creative office try something like this. split crop pantsA wide leg crop pant with a split from WHBM ( I actually bought these and love them!) worn with a cute striped shirt mitered silk blouselike this mitered stripe silk shirt from WHBM. I love the shoes with the outfit, notice the tassels.

For an evening or a  look to go out in.  You can totally interpret this trend in a silk striped dress. j-crew-pop-stripe-dressI love this one from J. Crew with its bright stripes.  Want something a bit more subdued? Still go to J. Crew, they have fringly lace dressthis fringed lace dress in 4 colors.  The fringe and lace look like stripes so you could wear this as a sporty trend but a little more sophisticated. fringed-edge-tweed-jacket-talbotsWant a jacket to wear to the office or with a dress. Try this one from WHBM that is dressy enough and has the sophisticated stripe. Or stick with one of AT’s best-selling items zippered peplum jacketa stretchy zippered jacket that can be both casual and dressy.

I have a good friend of mine who rocks white jeans with a jacket all summer long. Her choice is flare or wide leg jeans like flare white jeansthese from Ann Taylor. She wears jeans like this with a jacket like the striped on above or a silk striped shirt like one of those above and a pair of heels tassel suede pumplike these with the fun tassel and she is good to go and looks fabulous! This look is great for a business casual look because the white denim doesn’t really look like you are wearing jeans.

I prefer a pair of cropped white jeans white cropped jeansalso from Ann Taylor. I love it with a dark denim shirt as shown or j-crew-striped-casn-tankI would wear it with a striped tank ( like this one from J. Crew).  I am also a huge fan of the denim jacket talbots denim jacket. Believe it or not some of the best denim jackets that fit really well are at Talbots. I wear my denim jacket with everything.

One last look that is really prevalent for spring and fits into this trend as well as some of the others is the dress over pants trend.  I wore this look as a teenager when I sewed all my own clothes ( yes really!). That was one of my fave looks. Now I would wear a shorter dress like this classic denim one from WHBM denim shirt dressand I would wear it with the white cropped jeans above and pair it with a tied espadrille lace-up-espadrille-j-crewlike this one from J. Crew in a neutral color.

This takes us into all the ways we can wear this trend casually.  Out of all the trends for spring this one can go the most casual because it has the sporty element in it. at-striped-dressFrom classic striped polo dresses ( AT) worn with runners seavees-sneakers and espadrilles ( see above) to anything that works with the whole Athleisure looks. j-crew-limited-edition-tWear a fun striped top ( J. Crew but I found one just like it at Joe Fresh) worn with white denim tocropped joggersCropped joggers from WHBM it all works.
Casually you can wear as much denim and stripe was you want and tie it all in with a great track jackettrack jacket ( also WHBM).  I would even go back the split cropped pants above and wear them casually with the track jacket or the denim jacket.

For accessories I love all the cute back packs that are making their way into the purse market. rebecca minkoff backpackI love Nordstrom and they always have the best bags for the season.  This backpack by Rebecca Minkoff is small enough for everyday and will work for casual and the office. Or go upscale with one of the new cross body feminine messenger bags marc jacobs messanger cross bodythis one is from Marc Jacobs, but you could certainly find them at a less expensive price as well.

Scarves worn as necklaces really work well here. scarf worn as necklaceAnn Taylor shows this look best, but you can find small square scarves everywhere and just make sure the colors compliment or pull your outfit together.

Drop earrings are what is new and fresh this season. dandelion dropsJ. Crew has these cute dandelion drop earrings in 3 colors or go for striped earrings from Baubelbar stripe earringsavailable at Nordstrom.

One last note with this trend, all the shoes you see that have sneaker soles

like both these from Nordstrom ( Robert Clergerie and Dr. Scholl) all work. I will even be wearing my Uggs ugg ballet flats. I bought these ballet flat Uggs last year and I will totally incorporate them into this trend.

Remember a couple of things as you are shopping for new pieces for all the trends for spring.  Not all of it is for everyone. Some of us just don’t look good in wide legs or maxi dresses.  And it’s ok. Buy what looks good on you and you are comfortable in. If you need help with putting your spring wardrobe together I am available to help. Just email me at Suethefashionista@gmail.com for an appointment. I also haven’t been posting as many videos on Instagram as I was, I will get back to that now that I am home. I will try to show you all how I am interpreting the spring trends. Follow me on Instagram as Sue Hector.

I hope this week I gave you some food for thought with the Sporty and Bright Stripes trend for Spring 2017.  It’s fun to see all the bright stripes and play with your wardrobe.  If you are like me, sometimes just one new piece will add a whole new dimension to your closet.
