When you hear the term Pretty Prairie most think of wildflower prints and long skirts with cowboy boots. But this trend is the new version of a kind of Boho Prairie with all the wonderful soft colors, prints and fabrics you can think of.
Romance is a huge part of this trend. And you will see romantic fabrics like chiffon, lace, and satin mixed into all the ruffles and frills and detail that finishes them into a modern chic look. When buying new pieces to mix with your denim think of a new style to try like an off the shoulder top.Our friends at WHBM have lots of beautiful spring tops that fit really well and you can wear with denim or dress up a bit as well. One of the most popular tops WHBM has for spring is this the Carmen blouse. Here it is in a soft denim, but it is also available in white. I love the sleeve detail and it really represents both the prettiness and the newness of this trend. A delicate off the shoulder blouse in a pretty new color with lace in sets is exactly how the pretty and romantic look works. If you are like me and you absolutely don’t want to skip the bra, there are lots of strapless bras that will hold everything where you want it to be when you don an off the shoulder top.
The off the shoulder look and the cold shoulder look are very strong for Spring 2017. You are going to see them across all the trends not just this one. I believe women of every age can wear these two trends, just make sure you are comfortable and it looks appropriate for you. Personally, I am not sure this trend is for me, so I am going to wear flowy tops with details on the cuff, neck and hem instead.
Skirts are some of the most beautiful pieces of this trend. I have shown this medallion maxi from WHBM in an earlier blog, but this is the place to really wear a maxi of you want. This is where you could add a ruffle to a solid maxi like this one from Anthropologie. A really strong skirt that can work casually like you see here of for the office or out for dinner is the new pleated skirt. It is a midi length and this one from Anthro is in an iridescent silver. I have also seen the same style in a soft pink from Chelsea28 at Nordstrom. It’s a lovely look and would suit almost everyone. One last skirted look I want to show is this fabulous waterfall skirted pant from Anthro. This is truly the best of both worlds and I love the print and the Sheerness of the fabric. This would be a great casual or dressy look.
Dresses really own this trend as well. Everyone is showing floral dresses for spring. Mix your floral dress with your denim jacket and voila you have mastered this trend. Your dress could be as simple as this chambray shift dress from J. Crew or take the denim dress up a notch and do a prettier version ( after all Pretty is a big part of this trend) with an off the shoulder ruffle detail from WHBM. A lot of the softer floral dresses can take you dressier as well. This beautiful off the shoulder floral can work for day or night from WHBM. Maxi and Midi are super strong here as well. Anything lace works with this trend. This lace midi dress is from Kate Spade. the sunny yellow can work here with your denim and florals or wear it with brights in the picnic trend later in the summer.
One of the best ways to wear a dress right now to embrace this trend it is to try a flowy tunic like this one from Anthro. Wear it now with tights and suede booties and then later with wedges or block heeled sandals.
Pants are all over the board with this trend. I showed and skirted pant above but you can wear your bottoms in denim, floral, lace and any soft shade or fabric.Clothing and outfits you put together for this trend should echo and kind of Boho feel, but channelling a softer, feminine vibe.
Denim is a huge part of this trend. All the light washes, the embroidery and patchwork. A soft denim jean works so well with a soft flowy top.
Working with denim, start with the top silhouette. I really want you to notice the sleeve and pattern detail. A light wash denim like this snap hem pair from WHBM would be fantastic with any of the tops we are talking about today. And don’t forget about a wider leg as well, in a medium or light wash with a higher heel and soft lacy top you will own this look!
If you want embellished denim then go for it! I love the embroidery on all the denim I am seeing. Top Shop at Nordstrom or the Bay has a reasonably priced pair for you to try. I love this pair from WHBM that has a bit of distressing to it as well. Embroidery in jeans this season comes at every price and in every size, so if you like it go and try it
. If embroidery is not for you then try a different jean detail like this pair from Paige with the scallop at the hem. And of course patchwork is also a great look with this trend. These are Levi’s. As you can see every denim brand has something new to offer this spring. My one key piece of advice is if you are buying a new pair of jeans this spring make sure you buy a pair with detail. Even if all the detail you want is a simple bow at the hem, these are from AMO, then try it.
Layers are also key for this trend. Long layers in shirting ( Anthro) and layers over top. I am talking about the kimono. You will see lots of floral and detailed kimono tops. If you have one from last year, keep wearing it, but if maybe try one. I have never seen a kimono top or jacket look bad as long as you pay attention to the proportion. This shorter kimono from Anthro is being shown with a short denim skirt, but it would also look fabulous with cropped denim. The Chelsea28 kimono top from Nordstrom is a little longer. Wear a longer kimono with a skinny pant or pencil skirt.
Shoes for this trend range from booties to wedges to tie up sandals. Slides are huge and you will see them with every trend this spring, heeled and flat. This pair by Matiko at Anthro is perfect to wear with just about all the trends. For the office try a block heel sandal, this pair is from Steve Madden and it comes in 4 colors. I love this denim blue color! If you want a casual shoe try an espadrille. These are from Amalfi at Anthro and also come in a sand color. And of course booties work. Open toe or closed they really bring the Boho feel to the Pretty prairie look.
When you want to wear accessories with this trend think of all the Boho accessories you have seen. Saddlebags like this quintessential saddle bag from Rebecca Minkoff at Nordstrom works with everything. Or go for a tote! Totes are at every price and in every color. With this trend pic something different in a soft color, like this Creatures of Comfort Nappa Leather Malia bag from Nordstrom.
Gold tone jewellery works great here. Hoops and dangles for earrings. Rope chains and chokers for necklaces. Anything that has a Boho feel works. All of these images are from WHBM. You don’t have to spend a fortune to capture the Pretty Prairie look!
I hope that has given you something to think about as we get into the middle of March. More and more spring styles will be in stores and magazines. I encourage you to look online and find things you like before you go to the store. All of these looks are at stores we know and like.
