Last week we went through the first two trends of Spring 2017. In this blog post I will quickly try to explain the other major themes of Spring. Then in the following weeks I will go through the trends one by one and really dive into them.
So let’s dive right in:
3. Bad is Good:
The Bad is Good trend embodies all the edgy prints, shocking brights, slogan tees and the rockabilly 80’s glam that is trending. It very much echos the Pretty/Edgy trend we saw last season. So you are wondering what does this trend look like. Well this image from Anthropologie with the cropped Chino, t-shirt and jean jacket sum part of it up. Notice the details, the silk scarf around the neck and the delicate sandal. Pretty details with an edgier outfit. Take it one step further in this image from J. Crew. Distressed jeans are not going away and fit right into this trend. Denim on denim is still really strong. Here J. Crew borrowed the details from the other trends in a cute lace up sneaker ( this would look great with a black shootie too) and the floral top. Florals are in almost every trend for spring. So you can mix them all across your wardrobe. Here is where you would put darker florals, like this blouse from Whitehouse Blackmarket. Dark florals go with denim so well, mix it up with white on the bottom as the weather gets warmer. Slogan or applique t-shirt fit perfectly here. This one is from Wild Fox couture but they are everywhere. Wear dark denim, distressed looks particularly edgy.
Shoes and accessories echo the rockabilly of this trend. Pink suede heels from WHBM would be great with a dark floral top and skinny jeans. The Slingbacks in the middle are from Seychelles and available at Anthropology. They echo that black shootie we have talked about. And animal print never really goes out of style. An animal print accessory or shoe here ( like these from J. Crew) will edge up any outfit you are wearing.
So many basics and so little time? This trend is one of the easiest to mix with all of the others. It is all the soft pastels and khakis that you will see in military and simple styling. This is where you see all the utility jackets and simple styled casual jackets ( both of these are from Hinge). The feel of this new spring look is casual and comfortable with a seriousness that you don’t find in the other trends. Think your trench coat and pants in the same color. Or play with the seriousness of the trench. The key to mastering this trend for work or play is to keep all the pieces you are wearing in the same color or color family. This pant and top from Anthro gives you an idea of what I am talking about. For work it could mean soft suiting all in one pastel colorlike something you would find at Talbots. Or for a creative look, play with the same color family and add one of the newer pant shapesthis look from WHBM is playful and serious at the same time.
One shoe that is going to be huge this spring is the closed toe slide. This one is from WHBM and I love the pastel pink. Wear this with your utilitarian looks for a comfortable shoe option. Or go back to the classic espadrille above or evena tied up one in the same tone as everything else you have on ( J. Crew). If you want to change it up a bit wear a shorter trench (J.Crew) or play with your lengths and textures.
5. Playful Picnic:
The last major trend for Spring is exactly as it sounds. It’s an almost anything goes array of checks, ginghams, florals and colors. It is what you would wear to a picnic but dressed up for everyday, the office and evening.
Start witha great patchwork dress from Anthro that you can wear casual or dressy by changing your accessories in a sunny orange. Or take a beautiful floral bell sleeve top from Ann Taylor and wear with denim or white pants. You can wear a dressy silk print from Anthro to work with pale pants or a skirt. And wear all your gingham and checks like this top form Madewell on the weekend!
Do you want to mix this trend with one of the others? Then try doing something a little dressy like this floral dress under a trench from Anthro. Mix your dark and light florals and create a picnic edgy look with this fabulous topper from Talbots.
This trend is all about fun. Not necessarily casual wear, but a little bit of everything.
The type of shoes that go with this trend is any bright or floral or ice cream shade sandal or flat you can find. Espadrilles are strong for spring and the block heel sandal isn’t going anywhere soon. Both these shoes are from Anthro.
If you want to wear flats. And flats are where it’s at this spring, then stick to ice cream shades and florals. Both of these can be found at J. Crew. And of course this trend includes sneakers! Just make sure you pick a bright pair like these SeaVees from Anthro or any print sneaker would work too!
You will see lots of floral details on jewellery this spring. Pick them up in a necklace like this one from Talbots or bracelets and earrings. Bright, bold and colorful!
Purses are a bit bigger than usual Nordstrom will have a great selection like all these over sized hobos for you to peruse. Or go with something different and pick a striped or printed tote. They have a great selection at Talbots. For work you may want to pare down to a signet bag like this one from J. Crew available in 6 colors. And for the weekend grab your favorite straw bag and head for the farmer’s market.
One other notable mention: You will see abstract prints in colors that will go with all the above trends. Some will be tribal, others in colors that are trending but in prints like animal and dots. They are all great, just mix them with what ever trend you want to represent. Don’t shy away from prints this spring! Wear them like you own them!
There you have all the major trends for Spring 2017. I have gone over them very generally. In the coming month I will try to get each one explained in detail. One thing to remember with all these trends. You don’t want to dump your entire wardrobe and pick only one trend. My goal is for you to learn how to incorporate the trends you like into your wardrobe by adding a piece or accessory that embodies each trend.
Just a heads up that there will be no blog March 22nd. There will be one March 15th and then again on the 29th. I have to break for just one week. But in the next months you will read all you want to know about spring and how to wear it.
If you want personal styling or wardrobing please email me at Suethefashionista@gmail.com I am booking now for April and May. Also please use that email address to ask any fashion related questions you may have.
I know it still feels like winter outside but in a few short weeks we will all be looking for how to add some brightness into our lives and spring trends are a great way to add sunshine!
Until next time…
