One of my favorite things about getting dressed is figuring out the details of my outfit. After I put on my pants/skirt/dress/top I look how I can add to what I am wearing. Sometimes you don’t have to add anything at all. A great sleeve or collar detail can be all you need to make you look completely pulled together. Other times you are wearing a statement jacket or sweater and adding to it would only detract from how great you already look. Being well put together is far different from wearing clothes. When you pull an outfit together it should make you look and feel like the best version of yourself.
In the videos I have been posting on Instagram, for those who don’t follow me on Instagram you are really missing out on some key points in every day dressing. I am under Sue Hector on Instagram for those who want to follow. Anyway in the videos I have been posting, most of the outfits are quite basic and it’s either the jacket or accessories that really pull it together.
So what are some examples of things you can do to take it up a notch in your own dressing:
I am totally loving Ruffles this year. A ruffled collar or sleeve can make your entire outfit.Whitehouse Blackmarket ( WHBM) has a whole collection of blouses and dresses for early spring that have some beautiful sleeve, collar and hem details. This Carmen denim blouse comes in different colors and in a strip. The sleeve detail is so outstanding you won’t need to add much else to pull your outfit together. This denim blouse would be excellent with black jeans and booties now and white jeans and platforms later. They also have this fabulous striped dramatic sleeve sashed blouse. If you were to wear a top like this, you really need nothing else to make yourself look top-notch.
I love these 3 tops from WHBM. Each has wonderful details that make them stand out without looking like each other. The contrast lace in the first blouse will be great for work and going out after as well. The middle blouse, I am crazy about the print and love the sleeve and neck detail and the last one is one of those weekend blouses when you want a bit of detail, but not overkill for a casual event.
These next 3 images show you different looks again. The Black Lace Boho blouse on the left has tons and tons of elements to it. It has a lace up front, eyelash and ladder trim all over it and tie sleeves with a bit of lace on the hem. You for sure won’t need to add anything with all the built-in details! I don’t often show off the shoulder tops and dresses. But they are going to be strong going forward into spring and this one works in a number of ways. The sash detail at the waist will pull your waist in to look tiny and it also has great bell-sleeve details too. The right image is a v-neck blouse that has a double layer of fabric, but the sleeve is where all the detail is. The entire sleeve is ruffled all the way down from just below the shoulder to the cuff. It’s light and airy and pretty.
Now I have only been showing tops. How about a new sweater to carry you through the rest of the cold weather? I am a sucker for a peplum hem on a sweater or jacket. The only woman this doesn’t look good on is a pregnant woman and let’s face it we are all way past that stage of our lives. The sweater is embroidered and the peplum is woven so it complements the knit of the rest of the sweater. You could wear this anywhere. Work, out for dinner or to the office. Or what about a dress? WHBM has lots of dresses with lots of details but this one really caught my attention. I love the ladder detail down the front to draw the eye down and the bell sleeve and flounce hem really bring the dress to life. The dress also comes in black but I love this color and they call it Nail Polish.
Nordstrom as well has tops and dresses with tons of the same kind of details.
Both these two t-shirts have the all the ruffles you need. The one on the left is by Gibson and the detail of the sleeve and hem would be great on every figure type. It also comes in 4 colors. The one on the right is by Bobeau, and the double ruffle is all you need to make a statement with this t.
These two blouses offer you a pulled together look with a completely different element. Sometimes all you need is a great print to make you look complete. The blouse on the left is by Amuse Society and of course has an updated animal print that looks fab. The blouse on the right is by 1.State and it come with its own choker detail. Florals and prints are great for taking you into spring and both of these would be winners in every woman’s closet. Nordstrom also carries some J.Crew styles and this one with the stripe and sash is great, especially if you don’t want to do off the shoulder like above. And who doesn’t love a great dress. This dress is by Eliza J and has bell sleeves and ladder trim. It also comes in black but I think the pink is really fresh.
I mentioned finding a great jacket that pulls your look together and makes it complete.I bought this jacket in November and have worn it over and over. It is featured in one of my videos on Instagram. It is from Insight and has perfect detailing for me. Lace all down the front and buttons everywhere. It also nips in beautifully at the waist so you can’t tell if I have lost all the weight from the holidays or not. Every woman needs a statement jacket like this one. You can minimize your accessories and wear it with black pants or jeans and look complete!
Speaking of accessories, they are how you pull on outfit together if you are not wearing anything other than your basics!
A great statement necklace works on so many levels.
I have two that I wear constantly and they really pull a lot of outfits together for me. The one on the left is by Amrita Singh and I bought it in winter 2015 and I am still wearing it. The one on the right is by Eye Candy LA, I bought it last winter and again I wear it over and over. The are great over tops and dresses but they especially dress up a black turtleneck. And with how snowy and cold this winter has been in Vancouver I find myself wearing them over turtlenecks a lot.
Our friend Shoshana Krell talked about her jewellery line Shok Designs a few months back. Her bracelets can be layered and unlayered and they can make a basic outfit look spectacular.
Same goes for a statement earring. These two pairs of earring would make any outfit better. The first pair is by Baubel Bar and tassel earrings will move with you as your head moves. Great with an all black or white outfit. The next pair is by Loren Hope and these crystal drop earrings come in 4 colors and are totally huge statement earrings. Remember how Angelina Jolie wore green emerald earrings at an awards show and no other accessories with her dress. I am not her biggest fan, but this is a great look. Both of those pairs are available at Nordstrom. J. Crew is another place where accessories are important. These beaded rumba earrings are one of their best seller.
Want to make a statement without making a statement? Try a more subtle but substantial earring or scarf. These Panacea smoky crystal drop earrings at Nordstrom will subtly bring whatever you wear to life. Or simply wear a great pair of hoops. Make sure they are large enough or have a detail to make the statement you want. These Freida Rothman contemporary deco hoops at Nordstrom make the right statement in size and detail. And sometimes you are looking for something colorful that is not a piece of jewellery to pull your outfit together. Scarves work in so many ways. This Italian silk foulard scarf is from J. Crew, but J.Crew, Ann Taylor and Nordstrom have wonderful selections that won’t break the bank. I often will forgo a necklace and wear a scarf instead. It’s something you may want to try.
Going forward into spring you will start to see embroidery on shirts, tops and pants but we will save that for another blog. But if you want to start planning on what you will be buying come March, think about embroidery.
As I mentioned above I post videos on Instagram with outfits I have created from my own wardrobe. They are about a minute long and I explain why or how the pieces work that I am wearing. Please check them out!
I have had a request to do a question and answer blog about what fashion questions some of my readers have. I will get to that for my blog for Wednesday Feb 22. Next week is family day weekend here in BC so there will be no blog on Wed Feb 15. But Please send me your fashion questions, you have 2 weeks. Email me your fashion questions at Suethefashionista@gmail.com. I need them by Saturday Feb 18 if you want them answered on my blog on Feb. 22.
In the next few weeks it is time to clean out your closets for spring. Resale clothing boutiques won’t take spring goods in March. So my last blog for the month of February will be about what to keep and what to lose going forward. If this is something you want personal help with or you need help to figure out how to look your best I am available for styling and wardrobing appointments throughout February and in March until the 10th. So email me soon at the above email because my schedule tends to book up quickly.
That’s all for now, please don’t forget to email me your questions by Feb 18!
Until next time…
