Wearing what you have already

Why is it that we always want to go out and get something new before an occasion? Certainly last time you went to an occasion you bought something that was appropriate, so why not wear it again?  At least that is the question my husband is asking.  Basically most women want to wear something that no one has seen before for an occasion or wear something that really makes them look special.   And I don’t know if you all have found this, but I sure have,  I don’t want to wear something from 2 or 3 years ago.  I don’t like the style anymore. Or if you are like me, as you are getting older your body is changing and some of the things that worked 5 years ago are not working anymore.  So why can’t we wear what we have already?  Well here are some ways that we can wear what we already own and change it up a bit to make it look different or work for your changing body.

If you haven’t looked on Instagram lately.  I have put up a couple of videos with outfit ideas I have created from my own closet. I strongly encourage you to follow me on Instagram because I will put up one or two videos a week. I am not tech savvy enough to post them in my blog.  But on Instagram follow me as Sue Hector. I may eventually start a You tube channel but I will let you know.

So what do we already have that we can build around?  I like to use jeans or black skinny pants or leggings and go from there for a casual look. Paige Denim Sweater, Shirt & JeansTry using a patterned top like this plaid one from Paige denim, here it’s paired with a lighter grey sweater and light-colored booties ( also all Paige denim, including the jeans). Or use the same top and add a cream sweater and darker booties.  Try on different looks and see what you like best. Halogen® Cardigan, Top & KUT from the Kloth Jeans Another great look with jeans is a cardigan and t-shirt. We all own a cardigan and a white t-shirt. The ones in the picture are from Halogen at Nordstrom.  You can wear any color cardigan with a white t-shirt. Red, navy, yellow, they would all look great with this same look. The t-shirt in the photo has a cowl neck, but just use a t-shirt with a higher neck or a white blouse would work equally as well.   Personally I would add booties because it’s still winter, but the loafer will work going forward with this look into spring. Both those outfits are daytime casual.

How about going out with friends for an evening and you want to take it up a notch but still wear jeans or leggings?Trouvé Sweater, Tank & LeggingsWe all have a crew neck sweater.  I have grey, black and wine colored crew neck sweaters in my closet.  What colors do you have? Every color but black will work with this look of a sleeveless cowl ( or use a high neck black t-shirt) and leggings.  With a black crew sweater, I would switch to white or off white underneath. But everyone can do this with what they have.  Don’t have leggings, wear skinny dark jeans or skinny black pants.  Adding a metallic clutch will make it better for a contrast but wear any clutch you own that has a great look to it for the accent.  Close toe booties will work just as well.

Have a new black leather jacket like me that you bought on sale after Christmas and want to wear it as much as you can?  Try a look like this Trouvé Jacket, Tank & AG Jeansfor going out. Black pants and a graphic t-shirt.  Any high heel booties or shoe works here. cupcakes and cashmere Jacket, Skirt & Free People Cardigan Outfit with Accessories I know I showed this look before on my Winter Survival blog, but this look inspired me.  The plaid shirt and flowy sweater under the leather jacket is fab!  I love the layers.  We all have patterned shirts and a flowy sweater we can wear under the leather jacket with skinny jeans.

One other look that works for casual or going out.BLANKNYC Jacket, Rails Shirt & 7 For All Mankind® Jeans Outfit with Accessoriesis any color moto jacket with a shirt that matches the color of the denim you are wearing.  Black would be great here, as is the red. Loafers are more casual for day. A higher heel booties and some great earrings and a dressier purse would take this look into evening.

I love to wear my black leather jacket with a soft flowy blouse and skinny jeans.  I love the contrast of the moto jacket with the softness of the blouse. Go into your own closet and put on your fave pair of skinny jeans and start playing. Trust me you will find great outfits you absolutely love!

What about if you stand in your closet every morning before work wondering what to wear? You have a closet full of work clothes and nothing to wear? Do the same thing with your work attire. Pull on your favorite black, grey or neutral pants or skirt and start playing.GUESS Double Breasted Bouclé Coat, Halogen® Turtleneck & NYDJ PantsEveryone owns a grey or cream turtleneck.  Here the black pants are with grey and lighter coat.  If you wear a cream or white turtleneck you can wear a darker coat.  Play it up with a great bag, like the one shown.  The jacket is Guess, the turtleneck is Halogen and the bag is from Fossil.  But you can do this anyway. Grey pants, black turtleneck and a burgundy coat. Just keep playing until you find something you love!Halogen® Tunic Sweater, Shirt & Pants Outfit with Accessories Another idea for work is a sleeveless turtleneck worn as a sweater.  We all have them. They are great over skinny pants and with ankle pants like these or with a little flare at the hem. What I do when I wear this look is usually a black or denim ankle bottom ( I can wear denim to work) and then my grey sleeveless turtleneck and a long sleeve white t-shirt underneath. It’s great with black leggings and high boots in the winter too. If you only have a black sleeveless turtleneck, pair it with black pants and any color of long sleeve t-shirt you have, even stripes would look great!

What about your basic black suit, break up the pieces and wear the pants like above and the jacket over any print dress that has black in it. Vince Camuto Dress with Accessories. Or wear the suit together and put a print shirt or something you don’t usually wear underneath with it.Halogen® Three Quarter Sleeve Cardigan (Regular & Petite)Change your look up with a soft patterned t-shirt and soft colored cardigan under your suit. Halogen® Three Quarter Sleeve Crewneck CardiganOr pop one with a bright color like yellow with black piping underneath.

And what about going out to that occasion? What are you going to wear that you already have?  Free People Romantic Ruffle JacketI have a romantic lace and ruffle jacket like this one. (really,go look at my video on Instagram!) I wore it with black skinny pants, black booties and a silk cream sleeveless cami underneath. Maybe I will wear it next weekend with cropped jeans, high heels and a white t-shirt when we go out.  It makes me look thinner and I love it! Or maybe you have a kimono from last summer when they were super stylish. How about a kimono over one of your black dresses?Chelsea28 Velvet Kimono I love that look.  The flowy the kimono the better.  It will fall softly over your dress and look fantastic.  Want to dress that kimono down? Do it like I have shown it with a silk cami and denim. Ballou DressPlay with your look. Take your lace skirt and put an unexpected structured top with it.  This dress is from Anthropologie, but I used it to inspire me to wear my lace skirt a different way. York Midi Slip DressAnd of course what is old is new again too. A white t-shirt under a strappy dress is very nouveau (even though we all wore it before).  This look can work for day or night depending on the dress and the accessories.

By the way all the pictures expect for the last 2 are from Nordstrom and you can buy any of it online.
