Every season we hit a point with our wardrobe where we are ready to mix things up. It’s the beginning of November and we have all been wearing our fall clothes for a good month now. At this point I get a bit ready to change things up. Sometimes I spend a few hours in my closet trying to put different looks together, or sometimes I buy a couple of new pieces ( shirts, jeans, sweaters) and use them to freshen up what I am wearing. Or sometimes I just add in a few new, au courant, accessories and let them pull me forward. Wherever you are at, hopefully this blog will give you some insight into a different way to wear what you already own. Sometimes, it’s hard to re imagine your clothes. If it’s too hard for you then you can hire a stylist, or someone like me who will spend a couple of hours going through your closet with you. It’s called wardrobing and it is a really good way to make sure you love what you own.
Everyone has their own unique style. But there are some really basic, wonderful pieces that we have spoken about over and over that make pulling new looks together easy. The first thing we are going to work around is a great pair of slim jeans or pants. As much as we are seeing the ankle flare this season ( and I am in love with it) skinny pants are as big as ever and still so key to your wardrobe. Right now Nordstrom is having their fall sale and things, like these Joe’s Curvy fit skinny jeans are up to 40% off. A dark wash skinny or slim leg jean will take you everywhere and any where. Or use a basic black jean. These are Melissa McCarthy for 7 pencil jeans. Your jeans should fit you perfectly, there are a ton of brands like 7 that do specialty sizing. So if you need plus or petite or plus petite you can find the right fit if you. Don’t compromise when it comes to fit, well-fitting jeans make you look great. So you have one of these two bottoms lurking in your closet and you want something different to wear with it to freshen them up. Why not try:
Adding a ruffle shirt for daytime Banana Republic is a great place for shirts and blouses. This Riley fit stripe ruffle blouse is under $100 and will take your jeans up a notch and is dressy enough to wear with a skirt for an evening out or to a business meeting. Pink and Ruffles are super stylish for fall, so how about adding them both to your existing pieces.
Or what about adding one new, of the moment piece, like a vest. The Halogen brand at Nordstrom is well priced, fits well and comes in regular, petite and plus sizes. This one button long vest comes in both red and black and would look fantastic over black skinny pants or jeans. You can even wear this as a replacement for a blazer to the office, pair it with a skirt that is not too much longer than the vest. Layer underneath with blouses and sweaters and make it look a bit more outerwear is a really funky way to make this vest work for you.
Last fall we talked a lot about fur vests they are still super stylish and this one by Via Spiga ( on sale at Nordstrom) will make your basics look not so basic. If you have one from last season, pull it out and wear it over your blouses and long sleeve t-shirts.
One last way to freshen up your skinny jeans and pants is to add a different style of blazer or jacket. You could go a bit longer than you usually go and do a new style with out a collar like this double faced jacket from Talbots. Again it comes in regular, petite and plus so you are sure to find your right size. Or if you think you have that covered with a longer vest, try going shorter with your jacket. If you don’t own one, a moto style jacket is a fabulous addition to a wardrobe. Right now this Trouve jacket is on sale at Nordstrom. I love it over a longer top with a lean fitting bottom. This works to make everyone look longer and leaner. What an effect that makes you look super skinny, wear a blouse or top the same color as the jacket and a slightly different darker color on the bottom. Add a heel or chunky shoe or boot and you look 10 pounds lighter!
The other thing you may have in your wardrobe and think when am I ever going to wear this is a black slip style dress. It couls actually be any sleeveless dress you have in your closet, this one is deep v dress from Banana Republic. Fall 2016 is all about mixing things up. So take this dress and wear your ruffle shirt underneath.Ann Taylor has this great striped ruffle shirt with a little ruffle around the collar and sleeves. This would look fantastic under a sheath or slip dress in a dark grey or black. Or you can take your sheath or slip dress and a chunky cable sweater over top. This adorable sweater from Land’s end comes in a soft pink and a warm burgundy. Great over your slinky dress or sheath dress to make it work for daytime. You can also take a sweater like this ( we all own a chunky sweater) and wear it with the new cropped ankle pant the pant is also from Land’s end. The idea of wearing a blouse under or sweater over your dresses gives them a little more wear and life. You can use this to add a whole new dimension to your wardrobe. This is a great look for the office with a patterned tight and chunky ankle bootie as well.
One other fabulous addition to work with absolutely everything in your wardrobe is a patterned dressy blazer or even a velvet blazer. Pick one that works with the colors in your wardrobe. I love this Winter Geranium blazer from Ann Taylor. It works with denim, any dark bottom or even wear it with a skirt for a dressy business look. I love it because of the pinks and it would be fab with all your new burgundy pieces. Want to stick with basic black, try this patterned blazer from Banana Republic. Perfect with a dark denim bottom. But also so great with a grey sweater and black ankle pants or a black skirt. If the pattern is too much detail for you, look for a solid velvet blazer. Talbots has a new one every season buy it in one of the 6 great colors that will go with all your bottoms. You know you will find your exact right fit at Talbots. If your store doesn’t have the right size or color you can always order it online. Same with everything above. Sometimes you find better selections of colors and sizes online.
You can freshen up with some simply great accessories as well. A new necklace in a funky style can make your existing blouses and sweaters look different. Pick something fun and up to date with lots of layers like this one from Cole Haan or something with lots of texture and detail like this Lucky Brand one. Or if you are into it try a choker with detail, like this one from Free Press. I also love a long pendant with a medallion at the end . A long necklace worn with long or short layers makes your body look longer.
With all your ruffles and blazers try a shorter necklace like this Cristabelle short rhinestone statement necklace. Or do something really current and tie a short scarf around your neck and wear it like a choker Ann Taylor has a ton of scarves they are showing for this look and it is very Fall 2016. Perfect with your shirts for the office and great with a blazer and shirt as well. It also can add a great pop of color if you are wearing a monotone look. I love this look!
I hope that helps you feel like refreshing a bit of what we have been wearing over and over for fall so far. I tried to inject a bit of talk about specialty sizing into this week. In the next coming weeks I will be doing a specialty sizing blog for everyone who is tall, short or small or curvy. I will be having a guest blogger, Shoshana Lewis, who is an accessories expert to tell us how to wear all our accessories to take us into the holiday season. After that we will focus getting into the holiday season and then my last blog before the holiday break will be how to shop on sale when we have our big after Xmas sales.
If you need help with your own styling I am available for appointments to wardrobe or help you shop. Sometimes it really helps you stay focused if you have a stylist with you ( and you will not make any mistake purchases!). For appointments just email me at email@example.com, I will do my best to fit you in before the holidays.
Enjoy your clothes, if you are not enjoying what you wear there is a problem. I can help with that. Also please feel free to email me at the address above with fashion questions.
Until next time…
