Every fall season we see lots of added extra’s to make our black turtleneck and jeans into an outfit that everyone will admire. New accessories are the best and most inexpensive way to update your staples wardrobe for this season. Accessories play with your mood, they adapt to what your style is and they really make you look all pulled together.
Accessories include scarves, gloves, belts, wraps and jewellery. Accessories can include shoes and boots but since that is another blog we will just deal with everything except footwear. Stay tuned for a fall shoes and boots blog in the upcoming weeks. So let’s start at the top and work our way down the body when we speak about accessories.
Hats and hair accessories:
Fall hair is very laissez fair, it other words it is easy styling and this fall you are encouraged to wear your hair as naturally as possible: curl, waves and all. That being said lots of locks will need to be tamed. One of the quickest and easiest ways to finish your look and tame your locks at the same time is to put on a hat. Hats are huge this season, especially after a visit to Canada from the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate.
Floppy hats are still going strong and finish a Boho look to perfection You can buy this Phase 3 hat at Nordstrom in 3 colors. Also still going strong is the beret, from Halogen at Nordstrom and if you go beret, go with a strong color to add a little flourish to a monochromatic outfit. The slouchy wool cap is great to finish a casual look, this one is from Rebecca Minkoff and is great because of the texture to it. Baseball caps are making a come back for the days when you are wearing denim. Try introducing texture or interest into the cap with a saying on the front. This one from Rag and Bone is fab in the burgundy suede. But to me the hat style that is the best on every woman not matter how long or short her hair is and no matter the face shape is a great fedora. You can go very classic with your fedora in a simple classic wool from Rag and Bone. Or add a bit more flourish and do something like this fedora from Helene Bermanand add a bit of netting to an otherwise classic chapeau! Hats are great for keeping you warm and making you look stylish at the same time. One of the best ways to keep warm, and on trend this season, is to wear a bit of fur ( or a lot) on your head. both the fur hat and fur earmuffs from Nordstrom Rack with keep you warm and stylish.
Hair accessories are also similar to what we saw last fall. With the bow trend being so strong as an accessory on clothing naturally wearing a bow in your hair is on trend. This Cara bow barette at Nordstrom hits all the right notes for fall 2016. Cara is also doing hair bands with bows nodding to the important colors of the season. Jewel tones are also strong for hair bands and barettes. This hair band from Tasha will look very feminine in your hair even if you wear it with jeans and moto boots. Let’s face it, most women wear their hair in a pony tail part of the time. Why not make the pony tail stylish. Adding one of these pony tail holders from Nordstrom will do just that. Sometimes all you need is a stylish clip, instead of a bobby pin to hold your hair in place. Why not try something like these Tasha Rosie Posie hair clips.
Earrings and Necklaces:
It is said that you can change your outfit by simply changing your necklace and earrings. When travelling most of us travel lightly, that means one sweater and one pair of jeans. So taking a few different necklaces, scarves and earrings will make it look like you packed a whole wardrobe.
A statement necklace or earrings are things that make the most important statement of your outfit. Chokers are the big new necklace style of the season. Chokers come in every material you can think ofeven just a piece of lace with some beads on it makes a tremendous statement if worn as a choker. As you get a bit older you may not want to wear a necklace as tight as a choker, my recommendation is that you wear a collar necklace instead. Eye candy LA makes lots of decorative necklaces that sit on your collar bones and emulate a choker without actually being as tight as one. Something that has a lot of colored jewels or rhinestones in an intricate pattern will work over any turtle neck and with any collar and bring the pop you are looking for. A statement necklace can even be long this Natasha Accessories vintage pendant can work over sweaters, t-shirt and dresses. How great would it be with a white t shirt and jeans! Sometimes interesting necklaces are the way to go check out Anthropologie.com and you can order this Petal wing bib necklace that actually looks like it has butterflies on it. I like to vary my necklaces, some days long and some days collar ones. I usually wear the necklace that compliments the rest of my outfit. So if I am trying to lengthen my look I wear a longer pendant. Something like this Voyager Pendant from Anthropologie would be a necklace you could pull out and wear with lots and lots of things.
For earrings, I think you have to go with what you like and what suits your hair style. Right now I have a shorter graduated bob so I am keeping my earrings no longer than the longest point of my hair cut. But that is not a rule, just the way I wear my earrings. If you have a short pixie cut, you can totally rock a strong and long earring. And with longer hair you can wear anything you want! These Geometrical drops from Anthropologie add the right amount of texture and interest to work great for fall 2016. Lana Gunmetal tassel drops are also right on trend and a great way to wear fringe instead of on your clothing. I also love these Eventide Agate drops from Anthro because they are sophisticated enough for the office and cheeky enough for your jeans on the weekend. A great pair of hoop earrings never goes out of stylethese John Hardy Bamboo hoops would be fab for any wardrobe for fall. When I travel I take 2 pairs of earrings one pair of hammered hoops like these from Nordstrom in sterling silver and the other is the same pair but in gold. I wear my hoops with everything. The last thought I am going to leave you with for fall 2016 for your necklaces is the more the merrier! Don’t just stop at one. Play with all your necklaces and see which ones work best with others and then layer to your heart’s content!
Scarves, Gloves and Belts:
Scarves are probably one of the best ways to make an outfit different and unique. The choker tied scarf, or wearing your scarf as your necklace is a very fall 2016 way to update your look . Ann Taylor has quite a few small square scarves that you can wear this way. Or you can take this small tie scarf and then layer longer necklaces over top. Mixing things up are a great way to look current. We talked about this look at the beginning of the season. Now that it has gotten cooler we need scarves to do more than look pretty. A faux fur stole tied scarf in three colors ( burgundy, black and grey) is a great way to bring the fur trend for fall 2016 into your outfit. Plaid is also very trendy for fall, why not bring this trend into your scarves? Eileen Fisher has this cozy plaid scarf in this wonderful raisonette and a black and white. Colorful scarves with fringes also work really well at hitting trends for fall. This scarf is Kate Spade but you can find colorful knitted scarves with fringes almost everywhere. One of my favorite scarf styles is the eternity scarf pick one that wraps around and hits your collar-bone like this one from Michael Stars. I like to use scarves to hit the trends of the season, especially if I don’t own a piece of clothing with that trend. So an animal print scarf like this one from Talbots would be a great compliment to a fall wardrobe.
Belts can do the same for finishing an outfit that a scarf can. I go in and out of wearing belts. I find that unless I am using them to hold up my pants, I tend to go for trendier belts that again nod to a trend that maybe I don’t want to wear in clothing. So for me a snake skin finish belt makes sense
(Ann Taylor) I don’t necessarily want to wear snake skin but I want to incorporate it into my outfit and a belt is a great way to do that. Same with Animal print. Think of how great this belt from Ann Taylor would be to break up black pants and a black top. Detail is so important for fall, maybe a detailed belt is the way for you to add it to your existing wardrobe. If that’s the case then try something like this studded belt from B-Low at Nordstrom. A wide belt will help create the illusion of a smaller waist in straight fitting dresses or even wide coats. You are also seeing lots of Obi tie belt styles this fall ( Halogen at Nordstrom) to wear with higher waisted trousers and skirts.
Gloves are something that we focus on to keep our hands warm. But think of it as another way to accessorize your outfit when you choose your gloves. Gloves with fur trim or detail are a great way to bring the fur trend into your look. Gloves with bows and in a bright color by Kate Spade would make your outfit pop! Or do a patterned glove and make it the talking point of your look. One of my favorite looks is a great leather glove, but maybe do it in one of the new colors of the season.
Just remember you can personalize your outfit with your accessories.
Accessories should make you happy and not break the bank. I like to have lots to choose from so I tend to buy fun costume pieces and change them up every year. Do what ever works for your wardrobe and budget. Like I said at the beginning of the this blog, one of the quickest and most inexpensive ways to update your wardrobe for Fall 2016 is to update your accessories. I hope I have given you lots of ideas.
