I hope you are all really enjoying your summer! There are weeks left of summer so before I dive into blogging about what we will all be wearing for Fall 2016, I thought that I should first talk about how to deal with what you already have in your wardrobe. I clean out my closet twice a year. Once in early August for Fall and once in February for Spring. I know it sounds like a lot of work, but really because I do it all the time it only takes a few hours in day. Plus I can make some money back by taking my things to a local resale store.
Taking your things to a thrift shop or resale store works only if your things are current. I tend to turn over my wardrobe, except for my true stapes ( black pencil skirt, skinny jeans, etc) every couple of years. So most of the things I take are never more than two years old. You cannot sell something that has been in your closet for more than that, unless it’s vintage Gucci or Oscar de La Renta, it really needs to just be put on the curb for a local charity to pick up.
Before I clean out my closet for Fall, I do research. You of course don’t have to do the research because you have me. But it’s important to know what to keep before you get rid of something you will truly miss. So after all my research here is what I think you should keep if you are cleaning out your closets, or you can hire me to help you.
Let’s start with some of the things we have bought for spring that will go forward:
Orange: sweaters, shirts, tops, dressesCashmere sweater from Nordstrom collection.
Yellow: Same as orange but it will lean a little to the mustard side as we go into fall.Steve Madden coat.
Pink: Is still huge for fall, it just get’s a little darker and dustier. So keep anything understated and pink!Like this Pleonie split neck shirt in Pink Smoke.
Fur: Real and Faux ( I only wear faux). Especially if it’s colored. But remember the fur vest trend from last fall? It will still be strong this fall.Parkhurst two tone faux fur vest.
Off the shoulder looks and cold shoulder tops. Keep them as they will be showing them all though the fall season. Off the shoulder floral print blouse from WhiteHouse BlackMarket.
Puffy Jackets: I live in mine all winter. They will be one of the go to outerwear looks for winter and if you already own it then keep it!Rachel Roy Faux Fur trimmed Puffer on Hautelook.
Keep all your dressed up sporty looks you bought last fall and for spring. They are back and this time they lean a bit to the preppy side.Top Shop outfit at Nordstrom.com.
Midi and Maxi skirts! This is what I seem to be all about. I talked about my love affair with maxi for spring/summer, well midi is going to rock for fall. Keep all that you have. Vince Camuto Ponte Midi skirt.
Burgandy, wines, Aubergines. They are strong and will stay strong. So everything you bought in that color. Remember those fabulous J. Crew loafers from last fall? Well, you can keep wearing them!
Your Army colored and Military looks will still be strong, especially in jackets. Hang on to what you have.Like this one from Treasure and Bond at Nordstrom.
Jumpsuits, especially black for evening or something you can dress up or down. They are not going out of style anytime soon. A jumpsuit like this one from Vince Camuto you can make work for fall by adding a turtleneck underneath! That will be one of the fall trends, turtlenecks under dresses and dressier pieces to make them work for day.
Loafers: You will be wearing them for casual if your not wearing boots. See the darling pair above from J. Crew. Keep what you already own.
All the Motorcycle stying we have been talking about is staying around. Keep all your moto jackets and boots!Do you have a pair of boots that look like these Vicki Engineer boots from Frye? I do. Take them to the cobbler to get them ready to wear again this fall.
Keep your jeans. Unless they don’t fit or you don’t like them anymore. All the styles we have talked about are back. Skinny, Flare, Bootcut, Boyfriend, Cropped and Wide Leg crops. You will be wearing all of them all fall. As a matter of fact all your denim, especially if it’s darker. Keep every piece you own. You will wear it. I promise. We all have a pair like these Kut from the Kloth stretch staight leg jeans, they will be in style for a very long time. Replace your dark skinny and straight jeans when they wear out. But they will likely never go out of style.
Florals: They were certainly huge for Spring. Well hang on to the darker colored ones because you will certainly be wearing them for fall. Silk dress by Rebecca Taylor.
Cropped Wide leg pants. I can’t say enough but how important this trend is for Fall 2016. It all started last spring and shows no sign of slowing down. I bought a denim pair for summer and am looking for a classic black pair to wear with my boots for fall. Vince Camuto at Nordstrom.com. If you own a pair like this in any color or denim, hang onto them for fall!
Everyone’s favorite animal print, Leopard is huge for Fall 2016. I am a big fan of leopard print. I do own some. But remember the rule to successfully wearing this print. One piece at a time. So make your top plain and wear it on the bottom or vice a versa. Or for those who only dip their toe into this trend, a purse, shoe or belt will do the trick. If you already own something similar to this belt from Talbots then you are all set!
You will also want to keep all your booties and boots. I generally keep my shoes and boots for quite a while. I do take my boots and booties to the cobbler for refreshing before fall starts, especially if they are a staple like my Frye engineer booties.
As one of the services that I offer wardrobe planning and closet refreshing. It’s a little different than styling because we don’t go shopping together in a store. We go though your own wardrobe, getting rid of anything that doesn’t fit or suit you and work your newly refreshed wardrobe to fit your needs. It usually is a 3 or 4 hour appointment and my $100 per hour rate can be negotiated for a longer appointment like that. So if you want to do something like that with me, book soon because September books up quickly.
I have also had some retailers offer me clothing and products in exchange for blogging about them. I don’t really work that way. I don’t like to accept gifts and be expected to blog about it. But I do sell advertising on my blog or sell space to guest bloggers every once in while if I feel it’s something my followers want to hear about. And I am always happy to talk to stores and entrepreneurs about advetising on my blog.
For appointments, questions or to talk about advertising on my blog please contact me at email@example.com. I am always happy to hear from my followers about blogging requests and fashion questions you may have. Please use the above email address to get a hold of me.
Until next time…
