Why do I shop on line sales? For a number of reasons. Firstly, there are usually things I haven’t bought for the current season that go on sale early. For example right now most of the sites I like to shop at have summer shoes on sale. Another huge reason is that you can find off season (right now something you would wear in fall or winter) for a ridiculously good price. I am going to go into more detail, but now is the perfect time to find a winter coat on sale, as long as they have you size left. I also love to have a lot of choice in what to wear, but most of the things I love are not inexpensive, so if I am patient I can get them for a bit less.
How to buy current season items on sale:
If you haven’t already do yourself a favor and sign up for Hautelook.com. This is one of my favorite sites to shop at. I have bought tons and tons of designer things for at least 30% less than they are in stores. I bought a Dolce and Gabbana sequin skirt for $80 three years ago and I still wear it today. Every once in a while there is something so great, that you have been searching for, for a fabulous price. Sign up right now! Last Monday they had Eileen Fisher on sale!
So what are some of the things you can buy in season that are on sale. Well, on Hautelook I just bought this adorable Astr dressfor $49. They ship all over North America and it usually takes about 2 weeks to get to you in Canada or 1 week if you live in the continental US. I have bought handbags, shoes and even make up on Hautelook. Definitely worth checking out and signing up is free.
Other sites that are worth checking out on sale for current spring/summer clothes are some of the retail stores online sites. I love WhiteHouse BlackMarket. And they go on sale a lot. But where I live they don’t have a WHBM, so I shop online. Online there is a way better selection of everything. I have been missing a pair of gold flat sandals so last week I ordered these and they are $20 off. They add new things all the time. If you like a store, do yourself a favor and sign up for emails. That way you will find out when things you like go onsale.
Another store website that is fantastic to find lots of current season items reduced is Talbots. They are constantly having promotions. For example, today all their already reduced items are an addtional 30% off. Right now you can buy this black sheath dressfor $66.50 and then when you pay they take another 30% off! That’s another $20 off, so your dress is under $50! Just remember the prices are in US dollars and pay attention to shipping costs.
Some websites charge more for shipping an duty than others. Right now the best bang for your buck with shipping and duty is Hautelook.
The last website that I want to talk about for in season sale items is Nordstrom Rack. I absolutely hate shopping in a place like Nordstrom Rack. But online it is a dream! I don’t have to weed through all the stuff, they do it for me. I can even shop by brand. If you haven’t bought a pair of wooden sole shoes yet, you can find them here for a good price. This Charles by Charles David platform clog is on sale for $89.99, of you were to buy them in store they would cost you $150. So you can shop at Nordstrom rack for all your designer brands and check often because the popular sizes go quick.
Shopping off season clothes:
Shopping off season clothes ( spring in winter and winter in spring) is a little bit trickier but can be done. I actually buy a lot of what I consider my staples in off season sales. It takes a bit more research on the interenet but it is worth the extra time you spend.
One of my favorites to buy off season items is again Whitehouse Blackmarket. A few weeks ago I was able to get this leather skirt from WHBM on sale for $99 regular price was $300. I have been searching for a black leather skirt for a while and this will be an excellent staple in my closet for years. They don’t have the black leather anymore, it’s sold out but they do have this fabulous mocha colored onefor half price! You can never go wrong if you purchase a classic trench. It is your go to coat for spring, summer and early fall. Right now it is $100 at WHBM online. Something you may want to try and not spend a lot of money on is Wide leg cropped pants again $100 off and in a color you can wear in the fall with your boots as well. Last year fur vests were important and I can pretty much asure you that you will be wearing them next fall as well. Why not pick one up now for 40% off.
One of my favorite things to buy onsale in the middle of summer is winter coats. The one I bought a few weeks ago ( with my leather skirt)is $190 off . I will get a lot of wear out of this classic style. And I found this fabulous Persian faux fur coaton WHBM.com for 50% off. You just need to have the patience to keep scrolling and check often. Or what about a dressier dress, we always need those! WHBM has one that is regular $150 in their sale page for $39.99.
Another fall item I look for on sale off season is a classic cashmere sweater. I wear a lot of cashmere when it is cold out. It is always hard to find on sale. Another great website to buy off season sale items on is Talbots.com. It was hard to find but this wonderful black classic cashmere turtleneck was half price. Talbots is a great place to shop on sale ( online) for plus sizes and petites. They usually have a full size range of each. How about a classic puffer vest for half price and lots of colors left as well. If you time it just right you can also find great footwear on sale at Talbots.com. They don’t even carry footwear in the Canadian stores anymore, so it is kind of exclusive. These boots are suede, $100 off and they come in 3 colors. Again, something you will for sure wear next winter!
One of my favorite things to buy online on sale is jeans. But I only buy brands I know and I have already tried on so I know the fit. Every once in a while you can find Eileen Fisher jeans ( my faves) on sale at Nordstrom Rack or on Hautelook. But I also like Talbots petite jeans and Ann Taylor jeans, they fit my body. Even WHBM has jeans that fit well. Right now flares are huge for spring. I found 3 different pair all on sale less than half price online. Ann Taylor.com has these classic high waisted flares for $68.50. These you can wear all year round and will look great with jackets. WHBM has these Curvy Mid wash Flares on their site right now for $29.99 regular price was $84.00! And the pair I purchased was these flares from Talbots.com . Regularly $109.00 for $41.99. I bought these because I could buy them in petite.
When you shop on line on sale look for classics. WHBM has this front slit pencil skirt for $19.99, how can you go wrong with a classic pencil skirt? Just think how great this skirt will look with tights and boots in the winter. This is the kind of piece that is great to buy off season. You win with the price and they style is not so trendy that you can be assured it will stay in style. Another great on sale puchase would be a classic trouser, like these ones from Ann Taylor for $95.00, reguarly over $150. If you are lucky enough to live in Toronto, both Ann Taylor and WHBM have stores there. But you will never find the sale selection in store that you can online.
Shopping online can be uncomfortable if you are not used to it. In order to get started try shopping online at a store you know and have success in. I also try never to buy anything I can’t return if it doesn’t work for me. Talbots and Anthopologie let you return things to the local stores if you bought them online and you don’t like them. Hautelook has a really good return policy and you get 90 days to return. Be careful with clearance items, most of them are non refundable.
I know I gave you a lot to think about with shopping off season. If you have questions or need any help just feel free to email me. I also love to hear suggestions or comments for my blogs. For anything like that you can reach me at email@example.com. So when you shop online try and find things you will wear over and over again. Online shopping is exactly like retail shopping in one way especially: if you are in doubt about something- leave it out. If you think about it over and over again, then go back and order it. Also one last note with online shopping: things take time to be shipped to you. Some stores like Talbots have a shipping option where you can get it in a couple of days( you pay for this) but otherswise it takes a couple of weeks or more to get to you in Canada, so don’t order something you need tomorrow. In that case you need to shop in person.
Good luck with your online shopping and I am always here to help.
Until next time…
