For this season’s blogs I have tread lightly on the topic of shoes. And truth be told one of the things that I obsess about is shoes. You can build an entire outfit around a great pair of shoes or boots. So this blog let’s look at what is new and fabulous in footwear for this season.
Let’s be honest, I turn my wardrobe over just about every season. I keep what I absolutely love and can’t live without. But everything else goes. It is the same with my shoes. I don’t break the bank on my every day clothing. The pieces I invest are few. But I do invest in good boots and shoes ( and handbags) that will last thoughout a few seasons, especially when the price is dear. Spring let’s me off the hook a little bit price wise, because let’s face it, sandals and wedges are less expensive than boots. But I have found out the hard way how important quality and comfort are in a pair of shoes.
Let’s start with new trends in shoes for spring. According to Nordstrom.com there are 5 important styles to update your shoe wardrobe for spring.
The mule has been around for quite a few years and every few years it enjoys a rejuvination of sorts. The basic definition of a mule is an open or closed toed slide with a without a strap in the back. Updated and fresh this pair of Calvin Klein Cice mules come tone on tone or in this great textured style in either black or white leather. White is hot for spring, but I love it in black as well. Wooden heels are also making a big show this season in mules and slides and sandals. This might be where you add it into your wardrobe. Dolce Vita has this peep toed mule in 3 colors all with the contrast wooden heel.
Last pair of mules I am going to show you is this pair by Charles David. I loved it so much I bought it in two colors.I have it in this tobacco color and they also make it in black leather with black wood which I happened to buy as well. It is available on Nordstrom Rack.com so if you can find your size it is half price right now. Why I like it so much? It has 1.5″ platform in the front, so wearing it is like only wearing a 2″ heel and not a 3.5″ heel. I also find it very comfortable.
The Summer Bootie:
The summer bootie is like the mule only closed or has a strap in the back. I have to say I fought this trend for a while personally, but I really had to search for the right pair to compliment my foot and my legs. I have very muscular legs, so it’s important I don’t wear things that make them look heavier.
This is Sam Edelman’s version of the Summer bootie.Almost mule like. The perforation detail is great at adding lightness to the shoe. Tom’s is showing a peeptoe perforated version. Please notice how both of these styles feature the wood heel. This may be another way to add it into your wardrobe. But feel free to search for exactly the right one to compliment your leg and foot. This open style from Matisse may also work great for your wardrobe . What I ended up with this season is a modified sandal/bootie style from Eileen Fisher I bought it at Nordstrom Vancouver and it is the right height and shape for my leg and foot.
So much this summer in flats and sandals ( we will cover sandals shortly) has to do with lace ups. If you really want to be on trend this season, you will want to buy in a pair of lace up flats. This is the typlical one that you see at a lot of different price points: From Nordstrom’s house brand Halogen, it comes in 5 colors, has the pointed toe that is important in flats this season and laces up your leg. Another key style in flats features the pointed toe and studs, and it is a knock off of the famous Valentino style from last spring.Again moderately priced from Nordstrom’s house brand Halogen.
Ballet flats are still strong for Spring/summer 2016. And who makes the best ballet flat for a stylish spring? You can always count of Tory Burch for great colors and fabrics and of course comfort.
The espadrille sole is also really strong for spring, especially in flats and wedges. Steve Madden makes a huge splash with this blue and silver suede combo. Or one of my favorites is a novelty version by Tory Burch onl sale right now at Nordstrom.com. I am a sucker for novelty styles like this, that are fun and whimiscal and make you smile every time you wear them.
Last style of summer flat I am going to talk about is the loafer style. Who doesn’t love a comfortable and stylish pair of loafers. I have a pair in my closet that are in tobacco suede that are about 8 years old and I still wear them constantly and love them to pieces. A great pair of on trend loafers to purchase for this season would be this pair of Vince Camuto loafers . They cover off amost everything: Pointed toe. Perforated. And white. All the above fit perfectly into spring. If you need a flat shoe for your office a loafer in patent may be the perfect compliment for summer style pant and jacket. This pair of Calvin Klein’s is conservative enough for a court room and trendy enough for jeans and a blazer. I happen to have a patent pair of loafers from Cole Haan that are a few seasons old and I still wear them a lot. Here is a Coach version that is similar I tend to wear these loafers a lot with my ankle length skinny jeans. I just find they work with that leg particulary well for a classic yet casual look.
Something your daughter is likely wearing this season is the moccasin version of the loafer. ( Steve Madden). But if your daughter is wearing it, chances are it is not a look you want to wear. So how about a suede pair that is a little more chic. I love this Pedro Garcia grown up moccasin version, especially in this fabulous tobacco color. It is a bit more pricey than some of the others I have shown you, but you can’t put a price on love can you?
Who doesn’t love a great pair of wedges? I live in my wedges. I am not the tallest person so when I find a comfortable wedge I wear it, especially with all the tall men who live in my house. Wedges for Spring 2016 are varied. Some echo what is happening in mules and booties for spring/summer. Nordstrom’s house brand Halogen has this version in 4 colors that has the bootie ish style and wood heel.Via Spiga is showing an ankle strap espadrille version in 5 different colors. Steve Madden is showing a flat form version for this season . I have a pair of Steve Madden slides in the flat form heel and they are super comfortable as well. Another pair that happened to be part of my shoe fetish this spring are these by Dolce Vita I love the wedge, tobacco color ( it also comes in taupe and black) and the classic casualness of the shoe. For a dressier pair of wedges or something you may want to wear to the office, look to a brand like Kate Spade where you can find a tailored wedge that would work great with midi skirts and dresses. Or for something textured and whimical yet perfectly tailored for work or casual.
You will find wedges everywhere and at every price. Find a pair that you love and can wear comfortably and I promise you will wear them more than you think you will.
Last but not least let’s talk bout the summer sandals. Really and truly summer sandals for 2016 are all of the above versions and much more. Since we have covered wedges and mules above, I am going to focus on two huge versions of summer sandals. First off let’s discuss the block heel.
I love the block heel. It is so varied you can wear them almost anywhere. I went to a dressy event last night and I wore a dressier version of block heel sandals. They really and truly go almost everywhere. If you love the summer lace up styles you can do this in block heel. This version from Nordstrom’s house brand Hinge laces up and has the all important wood heel. You can also wear a bootie style of block heel sandals like this pair from Vince Camuto. Or update your shoe wardrobe with this version of Calvin Klein’s with a contrast heelthat brings the all important pink palette into your shoes. Tory Burch is showing a classic ankle strap version . The way I look at the block heel sandal is the summer version of the classic pump. You can wear it any height or any color that suits the occasion you are wearing it to.
Last pair of block heels I am going to show is an embellished pair by Dune London. I have a pair of embellished block heels and they are fabulous for summer dresses when you have stand all day or all night. I think they are definitley worth purchasing. Style and comfort, you cannot go wrong.
Summer flat sandals are all over the map. They lace up, you can slide into them, there are dressed up and dressed down flip flops and gladiator styles are still strong. Franco Sarto is showing a moderated gladiator version. Free people is going Bohemian with their lace up version. Tory Burch is showing a colorful patent version of her classic flip flop . And as much as I keep resisting Birkenstock is still strong in their classic style. ( Actually in my opinion they are all comfort but no style!). Or you can slide into this more lady like verion of Louise et Cie slides . Just go to Nordstrom.com and shop flat sandals and you can see almost everything and anything. I live in my flat sandals all summer.
So there you have it. All the shoe styles that are important for this Spring and Summer. Of course there are also pumps and dressy versions. But I covered that in my special occasions blog so I didn’t want to repeat myself.
